The SVS, formerly known as the SVA (the name changed on 1st January 2020), is “a self-governing organization of the self-employed for the self-employed”. The acronym “SVS” stands for Sozialversicherung der Selbständigen (Social Insurance of the Self-Employed), and as it indicates, it’s an organization that manages all affairs related to social insurance for self-employed individuals in Austria. The SVS claim to maintain the health of 1.3 million customers and protect them during illnesses, accidents, or retirement. Both the tax office and the SVS are two of the most important institutions that you want to keep good relations with during your time as a self-employed person in Austria.
